LEE YAE LIM/ Chapter 4 First Draft/ Narrative Composition Tue 3 4

<My cozy cave>

When I was young, I have many favorite places, but I want to talk about the one that I like the most. It is not only my favorite but also my younger sister's too. Our favorite one is the place under the desk. We called that place as "the cave". I and my sister's body were so small at that time, so it was not crowded when she and I went into that place. We covered that place with a blanket so that we can enter that place and hide ourselves into there. It was so excited to hide there since we thought our parent's would never find us. We thought it was a secret place only for us. The place was always too dark because of the shadow. So we moved the light which is located on the desk to "the cave". We did a lot of things in there. We read a book, draw a picture, and played some instruments. Playing into the "cave" is such a interesting thing to us, but my parents hate it. They always thought that would make our eye sight worse. After we are getting bigger, so "the cave" is no more a enough place for us, we stopped playing in there. I miss then even nowadays because those moments are quiet memorable experiences of mine.

Kim Hee Sun/ Chapter 4 First Draft/ Narrative Composition Tue 3 4

The most memorable place in my life is the dormitory I lived in when I was a high school student. Every semester students had to move to different rooms and meet different roommates, but the most memorable room was room 416, the first dorm room in my entire life.

The dormitory building had 5 floors. Floor 1 and 2 was for boys and floor 4, 5 was for girls. The 3rd floor was for teachers. As you might have already guessed, my first room was at 4th floor since the room number was 416. The room was at the end of the long, long corridor. Opening the heavy, turquoise door, the first thing I could see was a small square front door with a wooden shoe shelf which could keep only a few shoes. Inside the room, there were four bunk beds. There were desks on the first floor of the beds so that we could study. The desks were large enough to handle a lot of books and other stuffs such as cosmetics. And the second floor of the bunks had beds to sleep on. The sheets were dark brown, and the blankets had vivid orange color. I remember liking the blankets a lot because they were very soft and fluffy. In order to go up to the second floor of the bunk to sleep, we had to climb up a ladder. It felt cold whenever I climb the ladder since they were made up of iron. Beside the desks, there were little closets so we could put in our clothes. My closet used to be always messy with unfolded clothes. The dorm room was not that big so the room didn't have that much of spare space for 4 people. When we were sitting on the chairs to study, my back would meet the back of the roommate on the opposite side. The toilet was right next to the front door. It was not so big either, but enough for one person to have shower and do one's business. I can remember the warm, orange light of the toilet which somehow made me feel comfortable. On the middle of the wall, there was a little window. It was very small –almost the size of a computer screen. Sometimes we could hear dogs barking through the window late at night which made us very annoyed.

At first glance, room 416 might seem stuffy and uncomfortable since it's really small. However, with the memories me and my roommates made in the room, the room has become the best place in my entire life. Since we had to share one room, it took very little time to get close to each other. Every night when all the lights are gone, we climb up to the beds and talk for hours about our school life. We talked about gossips at school and mostly talked about boys. It felt as if I was on camping every night. Sometimes we hide secret things like instant cup noodles in my messy closet so that the dorm inspectors cannot find out. They could never find out since my clothes were piled up mountain-high. At that time, we were officially banned for food from outside such as noodles or chicken. But, as teenagers, we felt excitement when doing forbidden behaviors. After the roll call at night, we quietly go into the toilet and lock the door carefully, trying not to make any noises and hoping not to catch the inspector's attention. Inside the toilet, we pour hot water into the cup and wait impatiently for the noodles to be properly cooked. We had to be careful for the smell because it could leak out to the corridor, so we used deodorizing agents like febreze a lot. The midnight feast was awesome. It was more delicious than any other cuisines in the world, at least for us. Sometimes we got caught because of the smell and got punishment, but it was still a very enjoyable moment.

Other than that, we had tons of episodes made in the room 416. I cannot tell them all, but it was an amazing time and I had so much fun in room 416. For some people, when they see the dormitory rooms they had lived, they might recall the boring, suffocating atmosphere. However, for me, I had one of the most wonderful experiences at the dorm, and the room 416 reminds me of those memories which make me feel some kind of home sick. I miss those times when we liked each other without any conditions. I miss the times when we could giggle at night in the dark room on the second floor of bunks, sharing secrets. If I could choose one moment to go back to the past, I would definitely choose the time when I lived in room 416.

Lee Do Yun / Chapter 3 Final Draft / Narrative Composition Tue 3 4

I am sitting in a cafe around my house. It is a newly built place with cute dolls on the shelves around the wall. The wall is decorated with warm-colored bricks and orange and yellow towels. There is not that many people in this area-the cashier, a man sitting alone, two girls studying, and me. I start to stare at the man. He is sitting where the sunshine comes right in. He has black hair, not dyed like typical Korean. He is wearing grey knit over a jean shirt and black cotton pants. He is wearing beige socks and addidas sneakers, Holding iced-coffee, probably latte or americano, in one hand, he is carefully looking at his grey laptop. He is looking at the screen like a lion waiting to catch a roe. He is so concentrated that he didn't even move a muscle when the cashier left a small dish of meringue on his table. Several minutes after him staring at the laptop and jotting things down on his note, still having eyes on the screen, suddenly his grey face turns like a child. With a smile on his face, he stretches his arms. It seems like he finished the work he was doing. Then, at that moment, his eyes got contact with mines. At the exact moment, he dropped his arms and fixed his posture to sit straight, still having the childish smile on his face.

Kim HAJUN / Chapter 3 essay (Final Draft)/ Narrative Composition Tue 3 4

My friend USUNG

His name is USUNG JEONG. We're the same age and we met in high school. He has a furious expression. Because of his expression, I thought He is hard to get close to. Contrary to my think, He and I love sport, so he became close friend easily. He is tall and looks like sport player. Sometimes I remember that during break time, USUNG and I played soccer behind school building. Actually he did well in sports. Every lunch, he played basket-ball of soccer. Now if I recall about USUNG, I also liked exercise so, I thought him as rival. Of course I guess he also thought that too. When we played computer games as well as exercises, we always were competing and enjoyed the competition.

"I kill you!!!! Ha-ha."

"Your point is lower than me."

He is very competitive. He liked to win. But although he was lose, he could take the consequences. So, I liked to compete with him.

We were good friend. But he didn't express his thoughts openly. I felt sad at first. As time passed, I knew he's just been embarrassed about what he feel. He is tall and big but, he is introvert. He was easily moved to tears. When I saw his tears, I laugh loud. Despite its bulk, he is sensitive.

He wasn't leader. But, He is a person who smiles. So many friends followed him. And He did very well in school, especially in math. Friends ask math problem to him. People enjoy being around him because he's nice.

He is kind but has nothing to lose. He took care of his works. I couldn't take care of things in detail. So I envied his character. For example when he bought something, he found all web site he can and compared price. And he has a lot information about discount. He always collected information on sales.

Up to now, USUNG and I keep a good relationship. On these day, he has a big problem. He falls in love. But he can't talk to girl he loves. While he acted confident in front of close friend, He turns into a wallflower in front of women. In my opinion, he is very tall and handsome, but He has never had a girlfriend. If he summoned up courage to get close to her, I think her and him would make a cute couple!

KIM HAJUN / Assignment Task 3.2 / Tuesday 11am

When I went to café, although there were many people in café, café was very quiet. I ordered coffee and took a seat in an unobserved corner of the café. In that time, a couple came into café. Because of their facial expression, I looked at them. A man is very handsome, tall like model. A woman also is pretty and tall. I thought they are a couple fit as a pudding. But, as soon as I thought that, the man shouted. Many people in café were centered on him. The couple gave no attention to eyes. Their volume of voice was so loud, so I could what they talked.

"Why didn't you answer the telephone when I called this this morning?"

"I said I would sleep by this morning."

"What were you do last night?"

"I just drunk beer with my friends."

Then, tears streamed down her face. But voice of the man was much louder.

"Why are you crying? Stop, stop!!!"

I didn't know about the couple's situation. But, the girl with white skin was very pathetic. She continuously was crying. If I were him, I would hug his girl-friend. But, her boy-friend just looked at her face. I couldn't find sorry in his face, then I thought their relationship would over in an instant. Because interaction is very important but, the man did not react to girl-friend's emotion.

First Impression

201302991 EIT Chang Hye won

My mother used to say that people are made up by their looks when they are young, but when we grow up, we make up our looks. When I heard this, I thought about my friend Christina who fully live up to her own personality from her birth and made up her life and figure out of her characteristics. It is hard to find out which one was the first to make her life out, her looks or her characteristics. It is like the chicken and the egg question. However, Christina was one of the people whom others can feel her life throughout her looks from the early age. I still remembers my first meeting with her.

After I finally entered into the university, I decided that I desperately need some place for rest. Certainly, it was not my mother nor father, and I didn't want to give burden to my dear friends. Who I decided was the God. Sorry for him, but I thought that he would not mind having a bit more burden. Anyway, I thought that I just need some faith in myself.  So, I went to the Catholic Church. That was the place where I met one of my best friends. At first, Christina was not very impressive. To be exact, being the early bird in the weekend make me drowsy and I was half asleep at the morning sessions. Maybe that is why I could not able to recognize her out. However, I still had glimpse of her being tall and white. I first get to know her when I was baptized. My grandmother had me and the other girl named Celerina as the goddaughter. Christina was a high school classmate and friends with Celerina so eventually, she joined our dinner. Therefore, after the baptismal ceremony, all four of us, including godmother, her goddaughters, me and a girl and her friend had dinner together.

Dinner was the chance when I was able to actually look at her. In the warm beige colored background and dark brown colored wood, she looked like a person who is lost in the warm world. She reminded me of the snow. The biggest reason why I thought this way is because of her skin colored. Of course she was fully Korean but her skin color made her look bit different from other people. With a pale white colored skin, she surely looked like a snow queen. Usually, most of the Koreans have bit yellowish colored skin. Therefore, when people say someone have a really white skin, it means that they have ivory white skin. However, she had bluish, half-transparent like white skin. It looked very frail like a thin film of ice. Although, her overall looks were not as frail. She was not the type of damsel in distress, rather she was the beautiful evil queen.

Even though she had light colored skin, her figures didn't look so frail. Most impressive part in her face was her eyes with single eyelid but bigger than the people's eye with double eyelid. Because her eyes were heading upward, she looked bit foxy. Maybe I get this impression because she also had heavy eyelashes. It looked as if the butterfly seat on her eye and flipping its wings when she blinks. I bet her bit long nose made her overall impression bit more mature and stubborn. In most of the cases, she never put makeup on, but she is a fan of lip balms. Therefore, her lip always \caught my attention. Especially it is glossy right after she put her lip gloss on. It was the part where she get some lively feeling for herself.

When I said Christina later about her first impression as the snow queen, she was not surprised at all. She said that her ex-boyfriend once told her that being a girl 174 centimeters tall, it is much more likely as a queen than as a princess. While saying that, she stretched her willowy long arms and legs sitting on the chair. I thought little low and bit husky voice completes her look. She does not whine, she just asks for her right and say it straightforward. Celerina once said that Christina does not know how to say things backhanded. However, I think it perfectly suits her look and her personality. From her looks and words, I can see her life as a stubborn and firm snow queen.

I still remember her smile being bit embarrassed, but still feeling proud about her eyelashes. Her bit long nose, and lips also slowly caught my attention. Her nose was straight, but it had a little crook that it's hard to notice. For the lips, I could only remember that it was glossy. Maybe because we were eating or because I already felt some kind of love toward her.

More than her figures, I believe the feature that gave others most impression about her is her skin color. Of course she was fully Korean but her skin color made her look bit different from other people. With a pale white colored skin, she surely looked like a snow queen. After our meeting, I found out that she and I had same interest and we suddenly become a very good friend. Even though I found out many different aspects of her, she is still my best friend.

Hyewon Chang / 3.2 Descriptive Essay / Narrative Composition / Tuesday 11am

While I was just lingering around in my bed, I knew that I have to do something. Therefore, I went out from my bed and get ready to go around the café. Even though café is between the apartments, it is quite big. It is a franchise café, so it looks similar to other café. With the black and red color being the main theme of the whole café, the whole place look like the one that came out from the page of the <Alice's Adventures in Wonderland>. After I took a seat, suddenly I found a woman that caught my attention.

The woman that caught my attention was more like girl than a lady. I am saying this because she was wearing her school uniform. I bet she was waiting for someone because she was keep twirling her long hair and watching her phone. Her cellphone was certainly one of the iPhones. With the transparent case that had mint colored rim, I could easily see the famous apple symbol. When she was touching the buttons, her nails glim lightly because she was wearing transparent manicure. Not just by her manicures, but her hair also gave the impression of the girl who pay much attention to her look. Her hair was shining but she also dyed her hair in a deep brown. It was bit hard to recognize, but below the white flashes of lamp, I could see the reddish brown hue around her hair.

Also, she was wearing makeups. It was bit surprising at first because every touch of the makeup was just perfect. Her eyebrows were neatly arranged and she was wearing brown colored contact lenses. It looked bit creepy because her eyes look bit bulged out, but with the thin eyeline, it didn't look that bad. But her blushers, it was in a light peach colored. It looked as if her cheek is slightly colored by watercolor pencils. Overall, with her long hair and neat face, she looked quite pretty. Just as the time as I noticed her white shirts, grey vest and grey skirt look bit small to her, she got a call and went out.

Kye-yong Lee / Chapter 3 Final Draft (with a title) / Narrative Composition / Tuesday 11am

Description of Anonymous People in HUFS

I am sitting on a bench right across from the main building of HUFS. I chose this place to observe people because this is the place I can see the most people at one time. Most people go their separate ways. Some press on their way busily. One woman, perhaps in her mid-thirties, walks quickly across the street. She is wearing a navy blue skirt, a white blouse with a blue cardigan, and black high heels that click on the pavement. Her hair is pulled up into a bun, and she wears a bright pink lipstick. She carries a coffee in her left hand, which has a wedding ring on it, and she talks into the cell phone in her right hand. She is angrily yelling into the phone, scolding someone for a poor job they did. And even though she walks farther away, her voice maintains the same volume.

Walking behind her slowly is a student with a heavily loaded grey backpack. He walks slowly across the campus, typing on his phone and reading something. He has bright green headphones in his ears. He is very clearly well groomed and cares very much for his appearance because he stops every so often to check his hair in the reflection of his phone. And while checking his hair he steps into a puddle and curses. But no matter, his white shoes are unstained. He is wearing dark jeans and a white collared shirt with a dark jacket. His hair is dyed a light brown, and looks short and freshly cut.

Other people walk along the way with their family, friends, or their boyfriend or girlfriend. An elderly couple walks past. Their faces look similar, full of wrinkles and with concerned looks on their faces. He walks with his hands behind his back, while she walks with her hands to her side. Both of them have gray hair, and dark watery eyes. They both wear athletic outfits, him with blue and green and yellow hints on his pants and shirt, while she has purple and pink. She walks with a slight limp, like an animal with a wounded foot. He, however, has her injury in mind and walks the same speed as her. Every once in a while he looks to her to make sure she's ok.

A mother and her child walk past the elderly couple from the opposite direction. The mother has thick, short, black hair and wears too much red lipstick. She wears a long black sweater and a light pair of pants. Her child (perhaps a little boy) wears a vest over a white t-shirt, khakis, and socks with his sandals. She holds onto his hand wisely, as he seems to be looking everywhere but at what is in front of him. He trips a little, and she tugs at his arm and tells him to pay attention. He quickly hurries to keep up with her and pays attention for a short while, but seems to become distracted again while looking at his surroundings.

Towards the end of the path, a little child is so merrily walking with her father catching my attention at once. It is a little girl, and I would put her age at about 4 or so. The girl is not Korean, and has curly brown hair. She never loses her radiant smile. She wears a head band in her hair, which is bright with rainbow colors. She also wears sunglasses, which make her seem cool in some ways. She wears a yellow shirt with a big rabbit picture on the front, and tight blue pants rolled up above her knees. She plays around with a soccer ball, and squeals with delight when she kicks the ball to her father. Shortly afterward, she runs to her father calling him "Dada!" and throws herself into his arms. Then, he lifts her into the sky and they smile brightly at each other.

Yoo Jin Jeong / Chapter 3 Final Draft / Narrative & Composition Tuesday 3,4

In this day and age where the virtual world is almost as significant as our reality, the internet is becoming a valid place for people to unleash their creativity, find comfort in hard times, and extend whatever help they can to complete strangers. One such example can be found in YouTube. Through this website which allows you to upload and watch videos came a new generation of celebrities and influences called youtubers - people who upload videos and impact millions of lives through the internet. I am going to talk about a youtuber today, about what kind of a person he is, and how he affected my life. I'm going to talk about a man named Dan Howell.

Daniel James Howell is a 24 year old British youtuber (born 1991). He has brown hair with a fringe hanging over the left side of his face that has almost become iconic for his fans. He has brown eyes and white skin that is very prone to tanning, and after every vacation he takes he returns with a clearly darker complexion. He is very tall, so tall that the first thing many people say upon first meeting him is a comment about how tall he is. He is 191cm (roughly about 6 feet 3 inches), and when fans ask for selfies together he uses his extra long limbs to take the picture for them.

Dan prefers black or gray clothes, but despite his monochromatic wardrobe he has a good sense of fashion. He frequently uses hand gestures when he talks, and has "a stride in his step" according to someone who has seen him in real life. He has a certain laugh, a series of clear, high-pitched rings that bursts out of him when he finds something genuinely and uncontrollably funny. His gaze can range anywhere from intense and serious to soft and warm. Dan has recently hit the 5 million subscriber mark, and with his successful youtube career he has earned a spot in BBC radio, hosted the BBC Teen Awards, and recently wrote a book, all with his best friend and fellow youtuber Phil Lester.

I first found Dan through a different YouTube channel that featured his video called "Cringe Attack" where he discusses the strange phenomenon where "memories I have been trying to forget my whole life... are attacking me when I least expect it." He named it "cringe attack" hence the title of the video. I actually related to the video in a very personal way (as cringe attacks happen to me on a regular basis) and it made me laugh so much that I looked up the rest of his videos. From then on I just became a massive fan. Dan's videos are mostly snippets of his life and focused on specific topics, like his intense hatred for spoilers or how much of a procrastinator he is. He has a unique sense of humor and every video is just plain hilarious.

But although he often degrades himself for humor in his videos, Dan loves inspiring people. He knows that he has an influence over his viewers and in multiple occasions has talked to his viewers about standing up for their own lives and learning how to be happy. One example is what Dan calls an "internet support group" where his viewers send in their problems and he attempts to help them. Although it is mostly done in jest, he always leaves what advice he can for his viewers, like what he did for a twelve year old girl who was angry that her friends made fun of her for her above-the-average vocabulary. He said, "It is really important to never dumb yourself down to fit in... You should be proud of your intelligence."

Perhaps the reason why Dan is so concerned with helping people is that he's had difficulties of his own. He went through something he calls "the existential crisis" where he started questioning the meaning of human existence itself and how insignificant they all are before the grand scheme of the universe. It was this existential crisis that got him to drop out of college when he realized that life was too short to waste on doing what society deemed was appropriate for him. Apparently this existential crisis revisits him once in a while, and he has talked about this phenomenon in one of his videos, "Existential Crisis" where he shares what it feels like to have an existential crisis and how he deals with it. This video, however, doesn't just demonstrate what insane things go through Dan's mind, but also shows why he is so invested in his videos and his fans. He knows what it's like to fall into a place where it feels like nothing in his life matters, and he wants to help anyone who is in that same place. This video also spawned what is possibly one of Dan's most famous quotes: "Embrace the void, and have the courage to exist." If anything, I think that sums Dan up pretty well - he has the courage to exist, and he wants to instill it in others as well.

This is why I love the man so much. He has a great sense of humor and cares deeply for his fans, and has never failed to let that show. I was going through a very difficult time when I first saw his videos, but when he made me laugh my stress away and told me that whatever mistakes I may have made in my life only shows how much I've grown, it encouraged me and motivated me to pick myself up and work harder. It felt like a friend was assuring me that I was doing well, and that I can do even better. It gave me the courage to exist.

I am not the only one who was personally affected by Dan. Recently fans of Dan and Phil made a video thanking them for all the things the two have done for them. Some of the testimonies include: "You helped me accept myself." "You helped me deal with depression and social anxiety." and "[you] show me that it's okay to be different." They are fans from all over the world and different backgrounds, all influenced by the same person to turn their lives around and work to make it better. Though he may seem like just a random guy behind a screen making videos for the internet, Dan has done so much for his viewers.

Dan Howell will always be the first youtuber I subscribed to. Though he doesn't know that I exist (and odds are I will never actually meet him) he has helped me through difficult times in life and still helps me strive to be my best. But if I ever do get to meet him, my hopes are that I will get a chance to tell him everything that he's done for me and thank him, because really, to this day, he gives me the courage to exist.

Kim Hee Sun/ Week 7 Final Draft / Narrative Composition Tuesday 34

Ever since I was a baby, my dad has been a super hero for me. He always looked strong, supportive and steady to me.

He is 54 years old. He is 172cm in height and has black, thick hair. People say he doesn't get old. I also think he looks younger than his age.

My dad is not very much of a caring, friendly person. This characteristic runs in my family, and I think I have inherited his characteristics either. He is very inarticulate when it comes to expressing emotions. Also he has a very stable mood. In other words, his moods don't fluctuate. He doesn't get frustrated even when something serious happens. So I always rely on him when I have problems or going through hard times. He looks at the problems in objective view and gives me the right, direct answer every time. When I was very distressed and worried about entering universities and about my future, my dad gave me a valuable advice and that helped me a lot to go through the hard time.

"Whatever you do, whatever path you take, I will always stand on your side. Believe in yourself. What you choose will turn out to be the right thing for you in the end."

This is what he said to me. It might not seem very touching or considerable advice, but at that time it was so reliable and helpful for me. Thanks to that advice, I could settle myself down and concentrate on my study.

My dad is a chef. He works at Lotte Hotel, which is one of the five-star hotels in Korea. I always have been proud of him as a chef. He mainly cooks Italian quinines. Believe it or not, I heard that his pastas are considered to be the best in the hotel. He sometimes cooks pasta for me and I think, without exaggeration, it is the most delicious pasta I have ever had. My family annually visits the hotel and I love his uniforms. The uniforms are all white, and the hat is very long. As a kid, I thought it looked like a white churros. He looks very very good and handsome on his uniforms. He loves cooking and has proud in his job. I admire his passion for his own job. I wish I have a job that I love and have passion for, just like my dad.

Noise between floors

Many people suffer from the noise coming from a nearby house. I also suffered from the same problem. In the majority of cases, people get angry at the noise come from the very upstairs. The kinds of noise are so numerous; walking sound, music, quarreling sound. But, people in the downstairs make me tired. During three years when I first moved to the house, they don't have any manners for other people. Especially, one woman aged about 30 makes a continuous or an intermittent noise.

I tried to tolerate as far as I could. But, I felt as if she ignored me and my family. So, I have visited her house and talked about her bad behavior. I wanted to say swear word in her presence, but not to make the problem worse, I politely requested her not to make loud noise. She is like a hikikomori who is always in the house. She especially made noise at dawn. I was thinking about reporting her to the police, but it seemed to be reckless.

Even though I politely said about the problem, she just said "Okay" and kept making noise again and again. I have never seen such a selfish person in my life. When I went down to her house in order to say about the noise again, she answered the bell, but didn't even open the door. Fortunately, I have a plan to move my house in this year. I think we should consider the environmental noise when we move to a new house.

My dad

201202631 Lee, Eun Young

My dad is 51 years old but he looks much younger than that. He has black and half curly hair. He doesn't have many white hairs yet. He has round dark brown color eye brow and double eyelids. His eyes are big and deep like cow's eyes. He often blinks his eyes these days when looking at the close objects for he is already in his 50s. He is 173 cm, not that tall but not small either. When he ran his businesses, he only wore suits even in home but these days he started to wear comfortable clothes too. His had white and clean skins even whiter than my mom, but because he works a lot under the sun these days his skin gets darker and darker. People often say that my dad is handsome. Even his wrinkles make him look more like a gentle handsome man. However what really makes him handsome and unique is his smile.

His smile is really special. Everyone likes his smile because his smile makes everyone happy. He has the brightest smile like a sun shine, the most adorable smile like a five year old boy and the most generous smile like a Sejong the Great in the 10,000 bill. So he is often called as a smile man. His beautiful smile shows what kind of person he is. My dad has strong but delicate personality. He's very strict yet amazingly warm-hearted. When doing his jobs he is serious and prudent but in ordinary life he likes joking and playing tricks on us. These characteristics of him were built through his efforts to fight against a hollow sea of life.

He was the eldest son of six siblings. My grandpa had only one leg because he got injured during the Korean War. So from the early age, he had to take care of his family. He had to be strong enough to protect his family from harsh life. When he was a high school student, he was selected to be a researcher of one institute for he was a smart student. However, he had to earn money urgently for his parents and for his younger brother. He had no choice but to give up that job and worked as a baker in a local bread store. After few years, he opened a little book store. I still remember that I spend quite a lot of time in the attic of that book store, and when there were no customers he often read books to me. Although that attic was narrow and had low ceiling and the air was dusty and stuffy, I had nostalgic feeling toward that little attic. Also the background of playing with lots of books made me love reading books. Unfortunately, that store went to bankrupt, so he sold it with gulping down tears. Even after that he suffered from lots of harsh environments until I became about a 10. Recently my mom told me how hard the life was at that moment. She said that sometimes she didn't even have money to prepare a meal. However, even during the hardest moment, my dad never behaved harsh to family members. He never lost his warmness. He always smiled at me and he tried his best to spend lots of time with the family. Now, he's already in his 50s so he doesn't spend much time on his work, but at his best days he owned and ran three companies.

The biggest interest these days to him is to build a new house. We used to live in Busan until 2011. After I got into the university, our family moved to several places including the United States. Now we live in Jangsung in Jeonla province. He started to build new house there since March of this year. It's almost done but not completed yet. So he goes to a construction site of the house almost every day to see how things are processed. This summer vacation I went to home and saw our new house is being built. Interestingly, the house looked like my dad. I could see the house does reflect characteristics of the one who made it. The house looks solid and stable but also delicate and subtle.

I can say my dad is the one who influences me the most. How he lived his life often encourages me when I'm facing some harsh circumstances. He didn't say anything to me directly but his life itself is a great encouragement to me. I not only love him as my dad but also respect him as my life role model.

Shim Ho Seob/ Chapter 3 Final draft/ Tuesday 11am

I will talk about my best friend named Min Kyung Song. Because of his name many people who don't know him guess he is a girl because it's a girl name Song Min Kyung when we think his name in American version. But he is a really cool guy. I first met him in high school when we were in second grade. When the first class sitting positions were assigned, I sat behind Kyung Song and since then we spent 2 years in same classes. After the high school graduation, I studied one more year for university and he went to Konkuk University. Although we are now going to different universities, we keep in touch everyday and meet every week.

Kyung Song is a pretty tall guy about 180cm. He has a normal body type which is not too skinny and also not fat. His face shape is like an egg, narrow and oval. His hair style can be called dandy cut. But he can't be called a good looking guy. He has a small, narrow and slanted eyes and wide nose. His skin is not very clear and his eyebrow is pale.

However, girls feel quite attractive to him. Unlike me who had only one girlfriend yet, he dated with 4 girls since high school. And the girls were all quite pretty girls. I still don't know exactly why he is popular among girls. But I guess that he has a talent to make girls smile and comfortable. Not only to girls, but he is also quite popular in guys. He always talks about funny episodes and lead atmosphere of boys. Friends usually said that Kyung Song is so noisy, of course for fun.

He is now in a junior year of university. He is majoring business administration and studying for C.P.A(Certified Public Account). Because of the test preparation, he is taking time off at his university and going to a library near his home everyday. He rest once a week. At the break time he usually meets me and has some fun with me or plays soccer in his school's soccer club. I really respect his professional attitude toward his goal and strict self-regulation. It's his second try for C.P.A and I believe that he will pass this time.

Kyung Song is a really realistic man. He has a concrete blue print for his future and put effort to it. Also, he doesn't spend his time and energy for people who are not sincere in their relationship. He said, "I don't care what others think of me. I only care about my people." Also, he is a person who is good at seeing through people's mind. So he gives me many advices in dealing with many people I meet in society. I really get many helps from him in many different and difficult situations.

HER

My first impression of her was that she was very pretty, but a little ditzy. She had heavy lidded eyes the size of tea cup saucers which was further accented by copiously applied eyeliner and mascara. Normally, that much amount of eye makeup would seem too much and unflattering, but on her it worked beautifully. She had black wavy hair that flowed like a silky river all down to her waist. I could smell spicy perfume as well which was different from the sweet flowery perfume that most girls wear. By all means she looked like an Arabian princess and a very pretty one at that.

The ditzy part came a bit later. She seemed to be living in a world of her own and chuckled at her own words far too many. She would say random comments such as; "I come from Dae-gu city but I don't like daegu fish." At a different place and time I might have found her oddness enchanting. She reminded me a lot of Luna Lovegood, a character from Harry Potter, who I have always liked. But as her study partner, I was constantly annoyed by her general bemusement and out-of-this-world attitude. All I wanted to do was study (which was very unlikely of me) and here she was making random remarks about the dryness of the air or how ginkgo nuts are an amazing delicacy.

Then there was a day that will take years for me to forget. It was the day after a long and trying study session discussing the environmental problems that India is faced with. Yet again, I was slightly disgruntled, as our session was interrupted a few times with her insights about environment and Mother Earth ("We are her children") While packing our bags, I casually mentioned that I have been to India before and I did not enjoy the experience because I found the food was not to my taste which she remarked that she loved the food there. "Oh, have you gone to India as well?" "Yes, I actually spent about six months by myself in India." I was flabbergasted to hear that. Six months in India? All by herself without any family or friends? I could not believe what I was hearing. But there was more. "I lived in a monastery as a monk to do some self-contemplation. I actually shaved my head and everything."

Never would I have imagined her to do something so brave and unique like that. To spend six months in a foreign country (notoriously unsafe for women) alone and at a monastery for the purpose of achieving self -contemplation at that was something I could never do. The fact that she was not a Buddhist but went there to achieve self-contemplation actually impressed me even more. I wanted to ask her what motivated her to do so, but stopped myself from doing so feeling it might be too private which I have always regretted secretly. Even till this day, I am curious by what motivated her to do. The level of self-dedication was something that left me in awe.

The funny thing was that she was still the same person I was annoyed at before I knew about her experience in India. But now, her quizzical remarks seemed like insights with great depth. They did not bother me as much as before. Nothing had changed since I had known her but the way I viewed her completely changed once I knew of her experience. If I hadn't known about her stay in India, I would have kept thinking her as a queer person. And that is why after that day, I really try not to judge people rashly based on their actions.

Kye-yong Lee / Chapter 3 Final Draft / Narrative Composition / Tuesday 11am

Jang Won woo/Final draft of chapter 3/Narrative composition Tue34

Unlike most of my friends, I have lived with my grandparents since I was eleven years old. My grandmother has taken care of me and my sister. She got a perm like most of Korean elderly women. She is short now, but she was not. She was taller than average people at that time, but she became smaller when she was getting older. She has many bruises on her hands since she has a disease concerning with her platelet. Also, she puts in dentures for eating. She cannot chew and eat as other people. But, my grandmother does not consider her illness. Rather, she is living an active life now.

When I woke up, she always prepared a breakfast; even she prepared the breakfast and went out to swimming pool. She is working out herself constantly. She went to the swimming pool at least four days per a week and also went to the gym. Of course, it is good for her health but I am really worried about her dynamics. When I went to the gym with her, I was shocked. She was lifting very heavy weight in machines. I was worried so much that I told her to stop lifting. "Oh, grandmother, stop lifting it! You could hurt yourself." But she said, "It is my working out. Don`t worry" However, I cannot stop worrying her. Sometimes she hurt herself when she was doing exercise or hiking. One day, she tumbled at the uphill road when she was hiking. As I heard she went to the hospital, I was very nervous. However, she welcomed me with smile.

My grandmother is a food provider for me. She always gave me some food. Even she did it soon after I ate dinner. "Do you want some fruits?" She always said to me like that and gave me some fruits. Even she gave me fruits which I cannot eat since my allergy. An apple is one of the allergic foods for me, but she gave me apples for me. I had said it since when I was young, so she does not give me an apple nowadays. "Mom, stop giving him foods, he is full now. He is okay." My father and aunt always told my grandmother that when I came home.

Also, she is a worrier. When I admit to the university in Seoul, she was really worried about me living in Seoul. "Seoul citizens are cunning, please be cautious them." I just said "Don`t worry." When I went to the army, my grandmother could not say me something. I concerned her worry when I separated from her. After graduating a boot camp, I fortunately visited my home and saw my grandmother once a month. Every time I visited my home, she always asked my news. But, I want to her worry herself. She has lived life of dedicating to not herself but her children and grandchildren. She said "I bought something for my grandson." I know she loved her family. But, I wish her find her own life from now on.

Ari Min / Chapter 3 Final Draft / Tuesday 11am

My Friend Seung Woo

Everyone has that one special friend in their lives. My one special friend's name is Seung Woo Han. He was born 8 months after me. I don't remember exactly when we became friends because we knew each other since babies. My parents were good friends of Seung Woo's parents. Now, we name ourselves as "diaper friends." Most of the people who look at us for the first time think we date, but most of all my other friends know that we are JUST friends. My friend is not that tall or that small, but average, has dark skin, quite big ears, and is in the middle of chubby and fit.

Since Guatemala, we both lived in the same neighborhood, went to the same preschool, went to the same school, and walked together in the aisle when we graduated. In primary we were always together like a magnet. After school, we ride the yellow school bus and as soon as we arrived to our house we played until the sky began to become darker. He has a really big ego I've ever met. Since a child he didn't liked to lose or be after someone. Even now, when I have an argument with him I always say, "Okay, okay you're right," because it is impossible to win him in a dispute. He was a really active student not interested in school work. He was in the soccer and scout club. His grades were poor and was something that really worried his mother. However, beginning 9th grade he began to study more and improved a lot.

He is the brother I could never have or like the saying 'my brother from another mother'. He is an encouraging person. Whenever I am depressed or have a big worry, instead of giving me only advices and support he jokes and makes me smile. Also, he tells me I'm wrong when I am and is always honest with me. When we first came to Korea, he was a friend I could count on. Since we were young he used to tell my parents, "I will be Ari's bodyguard!" Now, when I talk about it he tells me to not mention it again, but I believe he will be always there when I need him. Even though we fight every time we meet each other, we get along after few minutes.

He is always positive. During summer on 2013, he had a really hard time because he was not being accepted to the universities he applied to. However, he believed he will be accepted to the last university and had faith in it. Maybe it was for being positive, but he really was accepted to the last he applied to and the university he really wanted to go.

I remember him being a small kid who had cried for not wanting to go to the military when getting older. However, he volunteered for military service and entered in the beginning of October which means that time flies and that our friendship will not change easily. Other people may only know him as being a funny person, but deep inside he is a great friend with a big heart.

My dad

Just like countless other middle-aged-people, my dad always wore so called outdoor-sports-wear. He is tall and has a strong build. And he has grey hair. He looks exactly like me. No I resembles him. His skin tone is very dark because he doesn't like sunscreen.

My dad is a really masculine man. In fact, I always felt that he is kind of like Wolverine from the movie X-men. Except for the iron nails, of course. My dad is capable of anything. Physically strong and mentally smart just like the Wolverine. So he is sort of hero to me.

He taught me a lot of things. And one of them is cooking. My daddy was a cook. Really great one. He is knowledgeable of Korean dishes. So ever since I was really young, my dad has tried to teach me how to cook. He's favorite food is Korean dumpling soup. So often times, we sit down, face to face, make dumplings. My dad knows how to spend his time with me. He gave his best to teach me cook well. And karma for that, I can cook somehow.

In fact, when we went on a trip with my daddy's friends' family, he always made meals instead of moms. And it was great. One of my dad's friends said "Ever since we were young, your dad has been our official chef. You should be very proud of him, dear". Hearing him saying like that, I felt amazing.

He is also an adventurous man. Unlike is his delicate cook part, he has a wild traveller part. When I was about 10 years old, I went to trip every once in a month. Most of the trips, we went to Gangwon-do to see the seaside. Also we went to Jeju island, Ulleung island and so on. He really likes to go to country parts, especially mountain. Even now, every weekend, he goes to climb the mountains. Sometimes, he digs up the mushrooms and brings those to home. And he makes delicious cuisines out of those mushrooms like mushroom chicken soup.

Whenever I think of this man, I always got emotional. It's not only because I feel blessed to have him as my dad but also because I know how hard it was to raise me. He is thoughtful father, sometimes very strict. He is, in deed, a really good model of an awesome dad.

Kim Tatiana/ Chapter 3 essay. Final Draft/ Narrative Composition Tue 3 4

My secret crush - Leo the cat.

When I see black cats they often remind me of him. A proud cat that does something only when he wants to. Is it because of his soft black hair and deep dark brown eyes, or is it about his actions which he does as if he very tired, I still have no idea. His name is Leo and I used to have a secret crush on him. When you fall in love with him somebody people usually tend to ask "why do you love him"? But I loved him not for something, but in spite of everything, despite his complex nature. Leo is very kind, quiet and shy person. But these characteristics are really hard to notice at first time. He is really silent, especially with strangers. And honestly, when I saw him at the very first time I actually was scared. Because he is not just doesn't talk anything but also because his eyes like gimlets, so he can shut you only with one glance. Once his friends told me that they had similar feelings when they had met Leo at first. It took me a really long time to discover his real character. Since we have never talked to each other in person, only in companies with our friends, and I didn't want to disturb them by asking lots of questions or let them know that I have some special feelings about him. So as a result, I used to watch Leo from the side.

I don't think there is a need to talk much about my opinion of him. I just, personally, consider Leo as one of those perfect guys girls are dreaming about. I mean, he is really tall, he has wide shoulders and snow white skin, his long fingers are more beautiful than pianists ones. His eyes shine even in the dark and he has a royal gait. Leo is literally a cat, isn't he?

Unfortunately, Leo smiles really rare as well, but he always does it sincerely, from the very bottom of his heart, and I can swear that it is the most beautiful smile I have ever seen. The reason for all of this is his shyness. He can't say something sweet and cute or even express it by his body. He can sing and dance quite well, but wherever somebody makes him a compliment the only answer is "I'll make more effort". Moreover, Leo speaks so quietly if he doesn't want others to hear him. And his voice is actually high and soft that it becomes more difficult to hear his speech. He may seem cold and aloof, but the truth is that he cares about people a lot and he never shows it straightly. You can see it solely by his actions. If you are cold he would silently give you his coat. If you fell he just would give his hand without any unnecessary words. And he is the man I used to love for 7 years. But that emotion is gone, and now I think of him as my family, my older brother and I just want him to be happy.

Ji Eun Bok/Chapter 3 Essay Final Draft/Tuesday 11am

My Friend Grace Hwang

I have a friend named Jung Hyun (Grace) Hwang. We first met in middle school. I knew from the very first moment that she was a very friendly and approachable person. I still remember vividly as it had such a great impact. Unlike the other students who were rather shy and timid, Grace was the first one to come up to me and say hi. She also started calling me "Thailand Girl" because I had just moved back to Korea from Thailand. Our friendship began then.

Grace is tall, just like me. When people see us together, they sometimes ask if we are twins or sisters. She used to wear glasses, but now she tends to wear contact lenses. You know you are really close when you have sleepovers with your friend and you finally get to see her without her contact lenses. When we first met, it was when the Korean middle schools had restrictions on the students' hair length and style. Grace had short, dark hair then, but now she has very long hair. Maybe this is another reason why people tend to think we look alike. Her mother has a hairdresser's license, so Grace gets her hair done constantly. Sometimes she has brown, curly hair, and then at other times, she has reddish straight hair. It is always fun to try and guess how she has changed the look of her hair.

I love Grace because she always has a smile on her face which brightens up the whole atmosphere. She is just like the sun. Her eyes make a crescent moon shape when it folds, and her mouth draws a half moon with her braces peeking through. She can be very cute. No one would think she is that tall if they just know her face.

Grace is also the funniest person you can be around. In a way, she is very silly and she will not stop making funny faces or comments. I find myself always laughing when I am with her. With her personality, she can become friends with anyone. She also has a very funny laugh which draws everyone's attention when we are outside. Everyone then stares at us to see who it is that has such a strange laugh. On the days we meet up to hang out, the moment I spot her she will start dancing and make funny gestures from the opposite side of the crosswalk. It does make me embarrassed sometimes with all the people around, but I can't help bursting into true laughter.

My friend is very talented. Grace told me she used to be a part of the musical crew when she was in elementary school. It is not surprising at all when you hear her sing and dance. She is just so full of energy and enthusiasm that she can turn any kind of music she hears into a dance. It can either be really impressive or just hilarious. Grace is a great singer as well. She has this musical groove that not everyone possesses, and she can really sing. When we go to the karaoke together, she grabs the microphone before anyone else does, and she sings a song which impresses everyone. She can hit the high notes without much difficulty, and she has these diverse emotions which she delivers through the lyrics depending on the genre of music.

Grace loves to eat. She is often on the internet, looking up nice, famous restaurants for us to go together. She is never picky when it comes to eating, and I've tried a lot of great dishes thanks to her. It's been nearly eight years since I've known her, and from the very beginning she has been telling me that she is on a diet, but she always seems to fail because she simply loves eating.

While people who don't know Grace very well may assume that she is just a funny person, she actually has a very warm and sincere heart. As an animal lover, Grace has a pet dog named Jung Nam. Apparently, he got his name from Grace (Jung Hyun) and her older brother (Jung Ho). I heard that Jung Nam is now 15 years old. Grace worries about him every time. I can just feel her compassionate heart each time she mentions him. Moreover, when I have issues to discuss with her, she puts on a serious face and listens very attentively. It's almost as if she becomes a completely different person, but it really helps to think that she is truly paying attention to what I have to say. Not only this, she would then give very constructive advice about the shared problem. There was time when I was going through some hard days for personal reasons. I shared this with her immediately, and hearing this, she cried with me. The two of us were sitting in the café, just sobbing and telling each other to stop crying. We must have looked very silly in other people's eyes. But to me, she was offering me the one thing I most needed: an empathetic heart. After all, she is my best friend.

Taek Min Kim/ Chapter 3 final draft/ Tuesday 34

Jung Hoon

I have a friend named Jung Hoon Lee. I knew him since we met in elementary school in the year 2004. I consider him as one of my best friend. He's a pleasant guy who likes people. He makes me and my friends laugh, he has the tact to make us happy. He has a wide acquaintance, he knew almost everyone in school when we were in the elementary school, middle school and high school. He also knew lots of friends which were in other schools.

clothes are something he likes too. When he were young (even though our teachers told us not to) he tightened the school uniform to make it look better. He is now studying fashion in Japan. He tends to dress up uniquely, he one day wore a large hat I never saw before him, and later I began to see some similar hats on the streets. He cares lot about his hairs too, he tried lots of different hairstyles. permed, two-blocked, long hairs like women's short cut and even shaved his hair. I think he tries to show his personality through his own fashion. Sometimes when he dresses way too far, I make fun of his look. Then he points out that I dress too plain in his view.

playing games were something he loved and he was competitive when playing games. We used to play games everyday after school. Back then Star Craft by Blizzard had tremendous popularity. He excelled it, I was good but now much as him. So sometimes when I beat him in the game, he was upset until he could beat me again. One day I was lucky too beat him a lot more than usual. I thought it was a lucky day but he wanted to play more because he wanted to win more than I did, so I almost had to beg him to go home.
